The Top 5 Causes of RV Tire Blowouts (And How to Protect Yourself)

If you've been around the RV community for any length of time, you've heard the stories. Maybe you've lived one yourself. A loud bang, the steering pulls hard, and suddenly your vacation plans are replaced with a roadside repair and an insurance claim.

Tire blowouts are the #2 most frequent insurance claim for RV owners. And with over 11 million RV-owning households in the US, that's a lot of blown tires and damaged rigs.

Understanding why tires fail is the first step to protecting yourself. Here are the five most common causes:

1. Underinflation

This is the single biggest cause of RV tire blowouts. When a tire is underinflated, the sidewalls flex excessively, generating immense internal heat. That heat weakens the rubber and leads to structural failure — often without warning.

RV tires typically run between 80-90 PSI, significantly higher than the 35-50 PSI in your car or truck. At those pressures, even a small drop can have outsized consequences.

Prevention: Check tire pressure before every trip with a quality gauge. Invest in a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) that alerts you to pressure drops in real time while towing.

2. Overloading

Every trailer has a maximum weight capacity, and every tire has a load rating. Exceed either one and you're putting tremendous stress on the tires — especially during turns, bumps, and highway speeds.

Many RV owners don't realize how quickly weight adds up. Water tanks, gear, supplies, and modifications can push you past the limit before you know it.

Prevention: Weigh your loaded RV at a certified scale. Know your tire load ratings and your trailer's GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating). Leave a margin — don't run at maximum capacity.

3. Tire Age and Dry Rot

Here's something that surprises many first-time RV owners: tires can fail even with plenty of tread left. UV exposure, ozone, and temperature cycling break down the rubber compounds over time, causing cracks in the sidewalls known as "dry rot."

Even more surprising — brand new RVs sometimes ship with tires that are already 3-5 years old. The manufacturing date is stamped on the sidewall (the DOT code), and many owners never check it.

Prevention: Replace RV tires every 5-6 years regardless of tread depth. Check the DOT date code on new purchases. Use tire covers when stored to reduce UV damage.

4. Road Hazards

Potholes, sharp debris, curb strikes, and broken pavement can cause immediate punctures. But they can also bruise the internal tire cords, causing a delayed blowout that happens miles — or days — later.

This is especially dangerous because the damage isn't visible from the outside. The tire looks fine until it suddenly isn't.

Prevention: Inspect tires after any significant road hazard encounter. Look for bulges, cuts, or embedded objects. When in doubt, have a tire shop inspect internally.

5. Excessive Speed and Heat

Trailer tires (typically ST-rated) usually have speed limits of 55-65 mph. Driving faster than rated — combined with hot road surfaces in summer — causes overheating and tread separation.

This is why blowout season peaks in summer. Hot asphalt combined with highway speeds creates a perfect storm for tire failure.

Prevention: Respect your tire speed ratings. Slow down in extreme heat. Plan travel during cooler parts of the day when possible.
